How Do You Know It’s the Right WordPress Theme?

Posted by

Your WordPress Theme says a lot about your website.

How would you like your website to look like? The next thing other than content is the design of your website. Wait, are you choosing WordPress? You’ve got to be making the right decision because, with a WordPress theme, you can create a quality website.

The features of your website complement your content. It matters a lot that you take time considering how it should look like. Everybody seems to be in a dilemma knowing the right WordPress theme for their websites, but don’t worry, WordPress has a lot in store for you.

But it is not easy to look for the right WordPress Theme. The first question that might probably pop is – Why WordPress? To recap, WordPress offers remarkable designs, easy usage, readiness for e-commerce, and mostly great support.

Then comes your decision on what WordPress theme to choose for your website. You might want to check on the following:

The Developer of the Theme

Are you curious, too, who created the theme you chose? This is something that most bloggers who use WordPress disregard.

Check the developer’s website and see how he does design. Take time to visit the WordPress theme directory, to see the ratings for a particular theme, and to know the last update.

The Support

What do you expect as support from the WordPress team? Everybody expects to get excellent support from the team for their blogging activities.

It will not be as hard for you to get support. There is the WordPress theme directory that has information about the number of downloads made for a theme, and also suggestions for particular problems.

Some solutions come from the same people who are also your support group and will help you with your chosen theme.

The Visuals

Unless you are a photographer, illustrator, graphic artist, or the likes, do not choose themes that are run by mostly images across the home page. Your website theme has to follow the type of content you have.

The Homepage Options

Have you decided how your homepage will look like? The homepage can be the introductory page or the default page on your website. Be cautious on what you should have on your homepage.

If you are into e-commerce, for example, it doesn’t need to look like a journal. Choose a theme with a customized homepage.

The Page and Post Templates

Always check the demo on how to go around with page and post templates.

Do you know that some themes may not be built with a set of customizable templates for pages and posts? Choose a website theme where you can freely customize pages and posts.

The Widgets

In case the term widget is new to you, here is a simple definition from Lifewire:

..widgets are small web components that can expand the functionality of a webpage or website…

You may want to check if the widgets are available in the separate areas of your website. Widget areas are where you can put your social badges or icons, search bars, statistics, links, etc. These are the interactive portions of the website that are found in the header, the sidebar, and the footer.

The Featured Images

How would you want your website to look? Take notice of how you use the featured images. What size do you prefer for it? They say the ideal size is 1200 x 600 pixels.

Do you set featured images for each post? Or do you set one for the static page? Whatever size you want it done, ensure that the featured image represents the post or the theme.

Customization Options

Though this is somehow related to support, there are WordPress themes that are built with simple customization features, and some are not. Interesting? It truly is, but you have to be careful about the allowed customization freedom because it can ‘make or break’ your website.

Free or Paid Choice

Do you want a premium plan? Before you decide to pay for a paid plan for your website, you have to map your goals first. What do you plan for your blog? What is the purpose of your blog?

Start your blog with a free theme first, although the support is not as great with a paid theme. You can pick up the learning bits day by day and become skilled in tweaking the features eventually.

You have to be cautious in whatever decision to make. It’s true with choosing the right WordPress theme. Know the purpose of your website. Consult an expert if the website is intended for business.

  1. Great tips. I should probably investigate the different themes on my WordPress and see if there is one that might work better. I started blogging in 2014 and haven’t changed!
